About Us
Maven is a warm, neighbourhood restaurant serving contemporary, lively food inspired by traditional Jewish and Eastern European dishes. Shaped by Owner and Chef Shauna Godfrey’s own family traditions and recipes, Maven celebrates the transcendent power of food across generations. Come here to feel at home, come here to see your neighbours, and most importantly, come here to eat good food.
Shauna Godfrey, Owner and Chef
Shauna grew up in a family of cooks. Her Bubby Rose taught her how to use simple ingredients to create complex, delicious dishes, and along the way, Shauna witnessed the transformative power of food and feeding others.
After graduating from Oberlin College with degrees in biology and religion, Shauna studied at the Culinary Institute of America. During this time, she worked at two-star Michelin restaurant Atera in New York City. After this she quickly established herself in Toronto, where she joined the Momofuku Toronto Restaurant Group, first as a line cook at Daisho, then quickly stepping into a leadership role as Kojin’s Sous Chef, where she led a large team for two years.
In 2020, during the heart of lockdown, Shauna focused her energy into launching Godfrey’s Supper Club. Drawing inspiration from the people who first ignited her spark in cooking –her mother and Bubby Rose– Shauna created a program that facilitated connection through food during a time when people were more isolated than ever. This heat-and-serve service earned coverage in the Canadian media, for not only its food, but also the heart and soul behind it. During this time Shauna was inspired to reconnect with her family recipes, and the initial concept for Maven was born.
